A healthy aircond is not silent, but it should be quiet. A soft hum from the compressor, the steady spin of a fan, a single click when the system cycles: all normal. The moment a new rattle, buzz or grind appears, something mechanical or electrical has shifted inside the unit, and ignoring it almost always makes the repair bigger.

Indoor Unit: Rattles, Squeals and Hums

Most indoor noises trace back to the fan or blower assembly. The blower wheel spins fast to push cold air over the coil, so it is sensitive to anything that throws it off balance.

A rattle is usually the simplest fault: a front cover or side panel vibrating loose, or a dry leaf caught in the blades. A squeal points to a fan bearing in early failure or a wheel that has lost its balance. A vibrating hum often means mould and dust have caked onto the blower wheel unevenly. Catch a squealing bearing early and you pay for a small bearing swap. Leave it and the motor burns out.

Outdoor Unit: The Sounds That Mean Stop Now

Outdoor noises are the ones to take seriously, because the compressor lives there and it is the most expensive part to replace.

A healthy compressor runs with a low, even hum. Loud buzzing usually means the compressor is straining to start, and a weak CBB65 run capacitor is the common cause. A capacitor swap is a minor repair, generally RM80 to RM200. A grinding or clanking sound from the outdoor unit is different: it suggests the compressor internals are failing or mounting bolts have worked loose. A replacement compressor runs anywhere from RM800 to RM2,500 depending on horsepower.

A loose panel often just needs to be pressed back into its clips, and that alone can end a rattle. Never do this hand check on the outdoor condenser, where moving parts and live wiring make it unsafe.
