Aircond Not Cold but Fan Still Blowing? Here's Why

Aircond running but not cooling? Common causes are low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a faulty capacitor. See the quick checks and when to call.

Sweating in your own living room while the aircond pushes out room-temperature air is one of the most common complaints we hear across Ipoh. When the fan blows fine but no cold air comes with it, the airflow side of the unit is working and the refrigeration side has stopped. The two systems are separate, which is exactly why the fan keeps spinning.

You can book an aircond repair straight away, but a few minutes of checking first often saves a call-out. Here is how to read the problem.

Start With the 60-Second Checks

Before assuming the worst, rule out the easy faults.

  • Thermostat and mode. Check the remote is in Cool mode, not Fan or Dry, and set below room temperature. TNB suggests 24 to 26 degrees for efficient cooling.
  • Filter. Slide the filter out and hold it to the light. A thick dust blanket chokes airflow badly enough to freeze the coil.
  • Outdoor unit. Step outside and listen. The compressor box should hum and the fan should spin. Silence outside is a strong clue.
  • Isolator and breaker. Look for the isolator switch near the outdoor unit. A tripped switch kills the compressor while the indoor blower runs on happily.

If the outdoor unit hums, the filter is clean and the remote is correct, the fault is internal.

The Four Faults Behind a Warm-Blowing Aircond

ComponentTypical SymptomAverage Repair Cost
RefrigerantHissing, ice on the pipesRM150 to RM280 (R32 gas)
Evaporator coilMusty smell, weak airflowRM120 to RM150 (chemical wash)

Low Refrigerant

Refrigerant sits sealed inside the copper pipes, so it does not get used up. If the charge is low, there is a leak. Modern R32 systems run at higher pressure, which makes pinhole leaks more common. Low gas means the system cannot absorb heat, so the room never cools.

A Clogged Evaporator Coil

The coil sits behind the indoor filters. A sticky layer of dust and bio-slime acts like a blanket, blocking the cold gas from absorbing heat. A chemical wash, usually RM120 to RM150 for a wall unit, clears the blockage and restores airflow.

A Faulty Run Capacitor

A failed run capacitor stops the compressor motor from starting, so the outdoor unit stays silent while the indoor fan blows on. Capacitors typically last three to five years under constant tropical heat. The swap is affordable and usually done in one visit.

A Failed Compressor

This is the worst case. A seized compressor or one that has lost internal pressure will not cool no matter how clean the unit is. A proper diagnostic tells a cheap capacitor fault apart from a dying compressor before you spend anything.

An Ipoh Angle: Humidity and Hidden Coil Grime

In the Kinta Valley, humidity holds near 84 percent for most of the year. That damp air feeds mould and bio-slime inside the coil far faster than in drier climates, so a coil-related cooling drop is one of the faults we see most in Ipoh homes. A unit that has gone more than a year without a chemical wash is a strong suspect when the air turns warm. Reviewing the signs of low refrigerant helps you describe the symptoms accurately when you call.

Good to know

A faulty capacitor is one of the cheapest repairs on this list and is often fixed in a single visit. Catching it early with a diagnostic prevents the strain from spreading to the compressor.

When DIY Stops and a Technician Starts

Anything involving refrigerant pressure, electrical components or the PCB needs proper tools and training. Topping up gas without a manifold gauge is guesswork, and adding refrigerant without finding the leak just wastes it. Capacitors hold a charge and can shock you if handled wrong. Inverter PCBs and thermistor sensors need matched parts and electrical testers.

Our RM50 diagnostic check covers the full cooling circuit, the PCB and the sensors, and the fee is waived if you proceed with the repair. Do not leave a struggling unit running for days hoping it recovers. Book a diagnostic check and get the root cause confirmed before a minor fault reaches the compressor.

Guide FAQ

Common Questions

Why is my aircond running but not cooling?
The most common causes are low refrigerant, a dirty evaporator coil, or a faulty capacitor or compressor. When the fan motor is fine but cooling has stopped, the fault is usually in the refrigeration circuit rather than the airflow side.
What can I check before calling a technician?
Start with the basics. Confirm the thermostat is set below room temperature, rinse the filter, and step outside to check the outdoor unit is actually running. A silent outdoor unit or a filter clogged solid are the first things to fix.
How much is a diagnostic check?
The diagnostic check is RM50 and covers a full troubleshooting inspection including the PCB, sensors and compressor. The fee is waived entirely if you go ahead with the recommended repair.
